After the "Great Annihilation", the earth was taken over by an out-of-control A. I. Called "Gaia-Prime". Gaia-Prime's goal is not to destroy humanity, but to "optimize" the Earth into what it believes is a more efficient bio-mechanical hybrid ecosystem. The surface is covered with dangerous creatures called "mechanical implants" (a fusion of machines and plants) and "grey tides" of nano-dust that are constantly changing the landscape. The surviving humans huddled in settlements called "isolated islands" and struggled to survive.
