The story takes place in a parallel world much like modern society. Technology and everyday life are no different from reality, but the divisions between the powerful families at the top of society are more clearly defined. The Si family, whose influence centers on the Beiyue Consortium, controls the lifeblood of the global economy. Its head, Si Beixiao, known as Lord Xiao, is widely recognized as the richest man in the world. He wields immense power, but his icy temperament and lack of interest in women have earned him the name “the Cold-Faced Buddha of the Capital.”
The Xiao family is a second-rate family in the capital, relying on other powers to maintain its status. The eldest daughter, Xiao Yue, grew up in the countryside with her late birth mother and is considered someone who is “not fit for high society.” The second daughter, Xiao Rou, was raised by her stepmother, Liu Yu, and moves in social circles as the “proper heiress of the Xiao family.”
In an exchange of family interests, the Xiao and Si families arranged a marriage. Xiao Rou, who was supposed to marry Si Beixiao, wanted no part of it, so her stepmother, Liu Yu, arranged to bring Xiao Yue back from the countryside to the capital to take her place in the marriage alliance. No one knows that this seemingly unfair union was something Si Beixiao had secretly planned for years.
