This book narrates the journey of Shen Yusun, a soldier from western Hunan, in and out of Qinghai from a first-person perspective.
At the end of the Qing Dynasty, Shen Yusun was ordered to accompany the army on the Western Expedition and participated in many battles to suppress bandits. During this period, he married a local girl Zhuo Zhen.
After the revolution broke out, the Sichuan army mutinied. Shen Yusun organized a total of 109 Hunan soldiers and cronies to return to the interior via Gansu. They strayed into the desert and were deprived of food for more than half a year. In the end, only seven people survived.
Zhuo Zhen, who traveled thousands of miles with Shen Yusun and went through life and death, died of smallpox infection in Xi'an.
This book interprets the thrilling love story between Shen and a Tibetan woman Zhuozhen, and paints a magnificent picture of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in the late Qing Dynasty.
The book has a total of 70,000 words, one chapter of about 1,500 words, and a total of 45 chapters.
