The historical story told in The Romance of the Sui and Tang Dynasties begins with Emperor Wen of Sui's conquest of Chen and ends with Emperor Suzong of Tang putting down the An Lushan Rebellion, Emperor Xuanzong's return to Chang'an from Shu, and his death in the Western Palace.
The book mainly recounts three kinds of stories. First are the heroic tales of the rebels who joined forces at the end of the Sui dynasty, including Qin Qiong, Xu Maogong, Cheng Yaojin, Li Jing, Yuchi Gong, and Luo Cheng, who fought against the Sui and helped establish the Tang. Second are the palace intrigues of Emperor Yang of Sui, who murdered his father, usurped the throne, and brought ruin to the dynasty through his debauchery. Third are the military achievements and civil governance of Emperor Taizong of Tang, Li Shimin, who welcomed heroes from the anti-Sui rebellion, seized power by killing his brothers at Xuanwu Gate, and ushered in the prosperous Tang dynasty, as well as the tragic conclusion of the An Lushan Rebellion, brought on by Emperor Xuanzong's favor for Yang Guifei.
The novel offers a general portrayal of the complex social life of more than 170 years of the Sui and Tang dynasties. It depicts and celebrates many figures, including heroes, righteous knights, wise rulers, loyal ministers, brave generals, and virtuous women. Using a narrative style that blends fact and fiction, it combines material from works such as The Sui and Tang Chronicles and The Romantic History of Emperor Yang of Sui with folk legends.
Its parallel storylines innovate on the historical romance genre. The first 66 chapters focus on the chivalrous resistance of outlaw heroes, while the final 34 turn to the palace story of Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei. Through landmark events such as the Wagang Stockade uprising and Emperor Yang of Sui's flower-viewing tour of Yangzhou, it traces the intricate intertwining of a dynasty's rise and fall with individual destinies.
