Synopsis

"The Flower of Evil", "The Appearance of Officialdom", "The Strange Current Situation I Witnessed in Twenty Years" and "Old Can's Travels" are also known as the "four major condemnation novels of the late Qing Dynasty". The novel focuses on the fate of the champion Jin Wenqing and his concubine Fu Caiyun. Its background spans about thirty years from the early years of Tongzhi to the defeat of the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1894. This was a critical period when Chinese society was undergoing unprecedented changes. The excellence of "Flowers of Evil" lies in its grand narrative structure and profound critical spirit. The work covers everything from palace secrets, official strife, and malpractice in imperial examinations to scholarly atmosphere, diplomatic affairs, and various social conditions. It almost panoramicly displays the corruption and turmoil of politics, diplomacy, culture, and society in the late Qing Dynasty. It vividly records major historical events such as the Sino-French War and the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1894, and profoundly reveals the incompetence of the Qing court and the deep crisis facing the country. As a representative of "condemnation novels", "The Flower of Evil" inherits the satirical tradition of "The Scholars" and ruthlessly exposes and criticizes the darkness of the end of feudalism in a pungent style. It denounced the corruption, malpractice, and drunkenness of the bureaucratic class; criticized the confinement and destruction of talents by the imperial examination system; satirized the pedantry and hypocrisy of the old-style literati; and also reflected the differentiation and exploration of intellectuals in the great changes of the times. It uses the stories of Jin Wenqing and Fu Caiyun as the main thread throughout, connecting a large number of relatively independent characters and events, so that although the plot is complicated and there are many characters, the main thread can be clear, scattered but not chaotic, and the form is scattered but the spirit is gathered. As a representative of the traditional imperial examination system, Jin Wenqing's inner contradictions, pedantry, helplessness and tragedy under the impact of the times are quite profoundly portrayed. The heroine Fu Caiyun (Sai Jinhua), with her complex and multifaceted character, legendary experience and strong vitality, has become the most dazzling, controversial and unforgettable image in the book.
