Breaking Free from This Cage

Tear Down This Cage is told from the perspectives of two female leads, telling the story of Yang Xiaochen and Nie Yun rescuing each other from the mire of their lives. Thirty-year-old Yang Xiaochen is trapped in the cage of being the “perfect wife.” Her husband’s indifference, her mother-in-law’s constant harassment, and stalled career advancement leave her swallowing antidepressants alone late at night. Nie Yun, a single mother, faces a glass ceiling and sexism at her advertising firm by day, then has to deal with her ex-husband’s lawsuit to win custody of their child at night. Fate brings these two very different women together in a divorce mediation room. Yang Xiaochen discovers that Nie Yun is the woman her husband had an affair with during their marriage, while Nie Yun recognizes Yang Xiaochen as the honors student who always beat her in school essay contests. When Yang Xiaochen’s husband unexpectedly falls to his death, the two women uncover a shocking secret amid a dispute over his estate: the seemingly perfect marriage cage conceals a terrifying truth involving three identities. With suspenseful storytelling, the novel pulls back the curtain on just a fraction of the hardships faced by modern women. As career barriers, the burdens of raising children, and violence in intimate relationships close in from all sides, these two “broken women” finally face off in court and discover that the real cage was never built by someone else: it was a prison constructed by the people it conditioned.
