Mr. Zhang Henshui is based on the Han Dynasty Yuefu narrative poem "The Peacock Flies Southeast" of the same name. The story is set in Lujiang Mansion during the Jian'an period in the late Han Dynasty. It tells the story of the tragic love and marriage between Jiao Zhongqing, a junior official, and Liu Lanzhi, a talented woman.
Liu Lanzhi was virtuous, polite, and talented, but she was ruthlessly abandoned due to the meanness of her mother-in-law Ruan and the oppression of feudal patriarchy.
After returning home, faced with the snobbishness of her brother Liu Hong and the strong force of the prefect's government who forced her to marry, Lanzhi and the cowardly but affectionate Zhongqing both died in love in despair. The novel not only vividly reproduces the poignant story of the original poem, but also deeply exposes the harm of feudal ethics to human nature through rich plot layout, vivid character creation (such as Jiao's mother's tyranny, Liu Hong's philistine) and detailed description of local scenery (Xiaoshigang, Ajiao Ban), and praises the protagonist's persistent pursuit of freedom and love.
