The Lantern That Illuminates Shadows

[Slow-burn political scheming, not a fast-paced power fantasy, no rivalry between women]

[Every character has shades of gray; there are no innocent, helpless heroines]

[Focused on women's growth, with romance as a secondary element (the heroine and her love interest start reciprocating each other's feelings at the one-million-word mark)]

[The first two volumes focus mainly on household intrigues. The third volume opens up a broad political struggle and shifts to an ensemble cast. A family residence belongs to one surname, the imperial harem belongs to the emperor, and the court belongs to the realm.]

Zhou Shaoyin is an older unemployed woman.

She transmigrates in her dream, gets off to a bad start, and draws Zhu Shaoying from a card.

Zhu Shaoying is not only an idiot, she is not even beautiful.

She is a lowly servant in the garden. Her lifelong wish is to earn her master's favor and be sent away to marry as a proper wife: living peacefully, eating and drinking, and seeing out her days.

By chance, the utterly forgettable Zhu Shaoying discovers an affair and gets caught up in the conflict between the old madam and the first madam of the Pei household.

From then on, things spiral out of control, and the lowly servant girl embarks on a journey to rise to power and influence at court.

Life is all about getting through one hurdle after another!
