The Lucky Farm Girl: A Prince Takes Her In While She's Fleeing Famine

Su Xiaoman was known throughout Qingzhou as the “Lucky Lady,” yet on her coming-of-age day, her scholar fiancé publicly broke off their engagement. “You're as fat as a pig. I'm marrying the daughter of the Minister of Personnel!” She neither cried nor made a scene. Instead, she produced their marriage contract. “Under the law, breaking off an engagement requires compensation of three times the betrothal gifts.”

A famine struck, forcing the whole family to flee. Su Xiaoman made clever use of her lucky koi-like constitution: wild fruits sprouted into groves wherever they fell, medicinal herbs gathered themselves to treat the sick, and even a pack of wolves came to guard their provisions. In a moment of danger, she saved a handsome, gravely wounded man, never realizing he was Prince Dingbei Xiao Chengyu, traveling incognito.

From refugee to wealthy household, from the fields to the imperial court, Su Xiaoman used her spirit spring and quick wits to overcome one crisis after another, becoming a leader among the refugees. When she returned to the capital with thousands of loads of grain to provide famine relief, the scholar who had once broken off their engagement knelt and begged to take her back, while the Minister of Personnel's daughter knelt before her and pleaded, “Please take me on as your maid!”
