In the summer of 1956, Wang Dali, a modern soul, suddenly transmigrates into the body of a recent high school graduate who shares his name and has just lost his mother. Faced with a difficult situation, he decisively takes over the permanent purchasing agent position his mother left behind at the Red Star Steel Mill. This plum job instantly makes everyone in the courtyard green with envy. Jia Zhangshi is the first to kick up a fuss, slapping her thigh and wailing, “That position should have been a blessing for my Jia family!” Yi Zhonghai, the self-proclaimed paragon of morality, follows close behind, pressuring him in the name of “helping those in need.” Armed with scarce resources from the planned economy, Wang Dali must shoulder the factory’s purchasing responsibilities while guarding against the covetous schemes of his neighbors. A fierce battle over the perks of the position erupts in the chaotic courtyard.
