Reborn as a Soldier of the Anxi Army

The historical records offer only a few terse lines. The Dali era name lasted only fourteen years in the Central Plains, until 779 CE, after which came Jianzhong, Xingyuan... But in distant Anxi, those isolated soldiers may have believed they were still living in the Dali era until the day they died. The coins they minted still bore the inscription “Dali Yuanbao.”

“Where is the Anxi Army?” Chen Yanzhi asked the empty room, summoning the last of his strength. His voice faded into the dust. “Anxi Army... are you still there?”

Just before his consciousness sank into darkness, he thought he saw the old man in the portrait turn his head. The old man's cracked lips moved, and a whisper crossed the ages:

“We are.”
