Synopsis

Shi Le (274-333) was the only figure in Chinese history to rise from slaves to the throne. He was born into the lower class of the Jie tribe and was once sold as a slave. He later started as an "Eighteen Cavalry" and unified most of the north, establishing the Later Zhao regime. During his reign, he implemented a number of reforms: establishing Taixue, downgrading corvee and devaluing taxes, emphasizing the Han minister Zhang Bin, creating the "three tests to enter officialdom" system, laying the foundation for the imperial examination system; advocating Buddhism, easing the conflicts between Hu and Han, and promoting ethnic integration. His mentor once commented that he had "great military commander ability and political foresight", and the "Book of Jin" said that "neighboring enemies feared the power and donated money, and the extreme territory carried the wind and paid tribute."
