The Strange Cases of Qingluan is a modern suspense novel centered on a string of murders in Qingluan City. The story begins with the locked-room death of Chu Huaimin, a restorer of ancient paintings. A mysterious symbol left at the scene draws Detective Lin Yan's attention to the ancient legends of Qingluan Mountain.
As the investigation deepens, Lin Yan discovers that the deaths of Chu Huaimin, the thug Zhou Hong, nature reserve manager Lei Bao, and others are all connected to a mysterious organization calling itself the Keepers of Secrets. The group seems devoted to suppressing a supernatural force deep within Qingluan Mountain known as the Eye of the Mountain Spirit. With help from psychologist Lu Qing'an, painter Su Jin, hacker K, and their other companions, Lin Yan gradually realizes that he may have a rare constitution that allows him to resonate with the Mountain Spirit. Meanwhile, the involvement of forces such as the international Prometheus Fire Foundation makes the case increasingly complicated. On the night of the new moon, Lin Yan confronts a mysterious figure wearing a red Nuo mask in a stone chamber on Qingluan Mountain. He witnesses a supernatural phenomenon, and the case takes an entirely new turn.
At its heart, the story is about uncovering the truth behind the symbols, exploring a conspiracy spanning time, and examining the choices people make when faced with the fear of the unknown.
