[Not a pure romance; short story; sweet and bittersweet; fully written and ready to read]
She still remembered that year, when they were young and full of spirit. The breeze on Hong Kong Island carried the salty dampness of the sea. She stood on the covered walkway outside the teaching building, bathed in the glow of the setting sun, in the prime of her youth.
Wan Jingqing, carrying a ball, stopped in his tracks after catching an inadvertent glimpse of her. He sighed, “She’s so pretty.”
His friend, drawn in by his exclamation, took a couple of steps back and followed his gaze. Realization dawned. “Oh, her.”
“You know her?”
“Who on Hong Kong Island doesn’t know the Shang family’s girl?” his friend explained. “The younger daughter, Shang Lu. Her friends usually call her Chui Xu and Gao Gao.”
A few classmates who had already hurried downstairs called out to them. Wan Jingqing took one last reluctant look at her, then turned and headed for the courts.
“My name is Shang Lu.” She stood on a step above him. Wan Jingqing looked up at her, like a believer gazing at a lofty god.
Holding a bouquet, she walked up to him and asked reverently, “Wan Jingqing, will you be my boyfriend?”
Wishing you:
A clear autumn for Jingqing
Shang Lu, bright and radiant
