May Your Wish Be Granted

Sunshine-knight medical student Jiang Shu × frail, sensitive young painter Ji Chenyu

In the blazing midsummer when they were sixteen, Ji Chenyu's slender figure collided with Jiang Shu's eyes, bright as the sun. That day, Jiang Shu brought color into Ji Chenyu's gray world and stubbornly pushed his way into his quiet life.

On the back of a sketch, Ji Chenyu wrote: “My life used to be so bleak. You were the one unexpected splash of color.”

There were mornings and evenings spent as neighbors, math lessons listened to through shared earphones, and the increasingly distinct canines and knuckles hidden in his sketchbook. Ji Chenyu drew two boys standing in a gentle breeze, watching the sunset together in its fading glow. Jiang Shu had arrived bearing light, and so spring began to bloom across Ji Chenyu's desolate youth.

The separation after the college entrance exam carved out five long years of yearning. Train tickets and phone calls filled countless nights, and the feelings they had shared as boys had long since become an unbreakable bond.

“May everything you wish for come true.” It was the bravest promise of my youth.
