At 29, Sun Xincheng finally entered the workforce, joining a bank’s credit card division.
His early days on the job were both ordinary and full of energy. There, he met Song Jun and Yang Xiaoming. The three encouraged one another, weathered difficulties together, complained together, and grew together, each holding onto sincere hopes and dreams for the future. None of them imagined that just a year after joining the company, they would all leave in turn and pursue different careers.
Ten years flew by, and time drove their lives in very different directions.
Sun Xincheng moved to a new bank and remained in the banking system. He worked his way up from the bottom, enduring countless grueling days and nights before steadily rising through the ranks. Now, though, he has hit a career dead end, trapped between two impossible choices. It’s as if he’s imprisoned behind invisible walls, sunk deep in the cage the banking industry has built around him. He wants to escape, but years of experience and habit have bound him fast, leaving him unable to break free. Over the course of those ten turbulent years, he has seen every dark and sordid corner of the industry: office politics, backroom deals, injustice, and corruption. It has all been laid bare before him, wearing away every edge he once had.
Song Jun was the least willing to settle of the three. After leaving the bank, he plunged into fast-moving consumer goods, then switched to e-commerce after several twists and turns. For ten years, he bounced from one industry to another, burning through his ambition and missing opportunity after opportunity. In the end, after all that wandering, he had nothing to show for it but a life spent adrift.
Yang Xiaoming, meanwhile, took the smoothest path. He learned the rules of survival at work and eventually secured a position at the top of his industry, becoming one of its leading figures.
Three men, ten years. They began with different aspirations, and in the end their paths led them to different destinations.
"The Besieged City of the Banking Industry": This urban daily work by Yi Wanpeng is restrained and delicate in writing, which is very consistent with the real texture of the banking industry workplace: there is no suspended conflict in the text, and only the ten-year career line of 29-year-old newcomer Sun Xincheng is used to spread out, hiding the core of the besieged city "people inside want to get out, people outside want to come in" in daily interactions and business details. The author's portrayal of bankers' salary anxiety, promotion bottlenecks, and identity dislocation has touched the pain points of countless practitioners. From the youthful experience of meeting Ms. Yang and Song Jun when they first entered the workplace, to the sobriety of seeing the siege of the industry ten years later, the writing is plain but full of stamina, and the helplessness and struggles of ordinary working people are deeply penetrating.
