When the modern young man Jiang Nan opens his eyes, oracle bones in the ruins of Yin are splitting in the flames, and the chariots of King Wu Ding of Shang churn up dust along the Yellow River. He has become the transmigrator everyone dreams of being, but he carries the secret of immortality and struggles to survive in the shadow of bronze cauldrons.
From farmer to courtier, he watches Fu Hao's battle banners soak in the blood of the Gui Fang and hears the wine pools of King Zhou reflect the flames of Zhaoge. Only when the fires of the Lutai Terrace consume the Shang king's final sigh does the oracle bone in his sleeve shatter. The obsession in his heart, however, burns fiercer than ever:
"This realm owes the Shang. I'll collect the debt with my own hands."
So he hides in the river of time, witnessing the Zhou court move east, rites collapse, and the fires of war among the feudal lords sweep across the Central Plains. After centuries in hiding, he finally stops in Qin, on the western frontier. At the time, Qin is little more than a vassal state entrusted with raising horses. He smiles at the bamboo slips of Duke Xiao of Qin:
"I'll help you destroy Zhou and unify the realm. But remember, this realm's true color should be dyed Shang red again."
From the flashes of blades during Shang Yang's reforms to the bloodshed of Bai Qi's massacres; from the clear waters of Dujiangyan to the ruins of the Epang Palace. He is a silent guest minister at court, an unnamed strategist in the history books, laying out a game of chess with a thousand-year lifespan: let Qin's iron cavalry trample Zhou's ancestral temples, let Legalist laws erase the mark of the Ji clan, and let the Emperor's jade seal bear oracle-bone patterns from the ruins of Yin, carved in secret.
When the bells of Xianyang Palace ring across the eight directions, Jiang Nan stands atop the city wall, his fingertips tracing the Shang king's jade tablet at his waist.
"A pact made a thousand years ago was never about revenge against Zhou. It was to make this chaotic age understand: the Shang never fell."
