Embers at Broken Cloud Crossing

During the Guangxu reign of the late Qing dynasty, Shen Yanzhi, a son of a scholarly family, is forced to flee with his mother after his father, Shen Jingshan, the governor-general of Huguang, is falsely accused of colluding with foreigners. Along the way, with the help of a token left by his father and the support of his father's former subordinates, he travels from Suzhou to Shanghai, navigating the turmoil between Qing officials, the grain guild, and foreign concessions. He must not only evade capture, but also uncover the truth behind his father's framing and protect the ancient books and principles passed down through his family. In the end, amid the sweeping clash between old and new ideas, he transforms from a callow scholar into a pioneer capable of shouldering his family's fate.
