"The Record of the Owl's Ashes recounts what remained of a great warlord. According to legend, Emperor Wu of Yue rose from the village of Kandangou. His original name was Chen Xiao. In his youth, he once saw a glow in the Dragon Pool and mistook it for a miraculous sign, though it was actually the torch of a bandit. Caught up in military service, he carved the character 'Owl' into his palm on a rainy night in Linyun, swearing in blood that he would never again live beneath another man's heel. After countless battles, risking his life and relying on cunning and political intrigue, he eventually claimed the throne in the south. Yet his own household took up arms against him, his children slaughtered one another, and his empire proved no more than a fleeting dream. I once pored over old histories, sought out elders, and heard their tales of his life. Astonished by his nature and lamenting his end, I gathered fragments of the past and mixed them with folk sayings and rumors to compile this volume. I do not presume to pass judgment on the rise and fall of dynasties. I only hope that future readers will know that amid the fires of this chaotic age, there once lived a man who struggled so, burned so, and in the end... vanished into oblivion."
