In 2077, when humans invented the "memory transplant" technology, the city was divided into "waking area" and "dream area": residents in the waking area shared "collective memories" through implanted chips and lived a conflict-free but empty life; the dream area was the habitat of the exiles, who retained untampered private memories, but were regarded as "carriers of the memory virus" by the waking area.
The protagonist Su Zhe is the "memory restorer" in the waking zone, responsible for clearing "abnormal fluctuations" in collective memory. Until during a mission, she found an old tape in the ruins of the dream zone - the male voice on the tape repeatedly read her name, but this memory never existed in her chip. In order to find the truth, she sneaked into the dream zone, but accidentally triggered a "time fold": every time she touched an old object that carried strong emotions, she would fall into the corresponding memory fragments. What these fragments pieced together turned out to be a war about "choosing to forget or remember" that was covered up by collective memory.
As the investigation deepens, Su Zhe discovers that she is the only survivor of the "Memory Revolution", and the male voice on the tape belongs to her former lover Lu Chen - a man who was defined as a "terrorist" by the awakening zone, but who dedicated his life to retaining the last bit of private memory for mankind. When the "collective memory system" in the waking area begins to collapse, Su Zhe must choose between two futures: let mankind retreat to a painless false peace, or bear scars and re-embrace real memories and emotions?
