Lin Qiye opened his eyes to a shrill ringing in his ears, a dull ache pulsing at the back of his head. He instinctively tried to raise a hand to rub his temples, only to find his wrists secured to the wall by cold metal cuffs.
“Where... am I?”
“Anyone there?” He tentatively tapped a knuckle against a pipe.
The tapping stopped abruptly. Thirty seconds later, a new string of Morse code came through:

The words were unhinged, but they made the hairs on the back of Lin Qiye’s neck stand on end. He was about to reply when a sticky, wet dripping sound came from outside the door. Through the shifting light beneath the door, he saw a pool of translucent, gelatinous matter wriggling along the corridor floor, leaving a charred, corrosive trail in its wake.
“Zhou Ye.” The man scratched crooked letters into the floor with the tip of a piece of rebar. “That’s my name. Of course, you can also call me ‘the most dangerous lunatic in the Abyssal Psychiatric Ward.’ That’s what my medical file says.”
