The wind carried two scents: rotten grain husks, and a stronger, sweetly rank smell of grass.
The cracked earth looked like an old person’s chapped palm, baking its last trace of moisture into poisonous miasma. A starving corpse lay curled beneath an embankment, ribs jutting like dried firewood. Several crows pecked at the grass roots he hadn’t managed to swallow. The roots were a strange bluish purple. After two pecks, the crows suddenly flapped and fell to the ground, their claws twitching into hooks.
In the distance, a mass grave wavered in the fog, like bloated, rotting flesh. A swamp lay hidden in the thickest mist. Green scum floated on its surface, and now and then a bubble burst, revealing dark brown silt below. Half a bone was embedded in the mud, stark white, like a signpost someone had deliberately planted there.
A shadow writhed among the poisonous weeds. Broken ribs scraped against the ground, and every movement felt like a blunt knife twisting in his chest. He stared at the swamp as the blue mottling in his palm suddenly grew hot, like a grain of red-hot sand burrowing into his flesh.
A faint weeping drifted through the fog, sounding like a child, or a dying beast. He knew it wasn’t a hallucination. Too many children who had died before they were old enough to remember had been buried in this land. Their bones had sprouted in the mud, and the grass that grew from them had roots with teeth.
Gritting his teeth, he crawled toward the swamp. Behind him, the crow carcasses rotted at a visible pace. Pus seeped into the soil and somehow brought forth several tiny seedlings with serrated leaves.
The story begins here: when hunger hurts more than poison, people will always reach toward the most dangerous place.
"Bone Feeding Poison" is a flower of evil born when civilization decays - the roots are wrapped around the bones, the petals are dripping with antidote, and the fragrance of the flowers makes you willing to sink! " Dark literature
