Time itself has fallen apart, and a sinister mirror devours its victims. Forensic pathologist Su Duo is forced into a deadly game that loops through the twelve double-hours of the day, each one a bone-deep nightmare of a sealed room.
Here, mirrors swallow shadows, and candles burn away lies. And then there is Chu Xi, a pale woman who is powerful enough to make the rules tremble, yet always pretends to be weak as she follows him around.
She wipes the blood from his face, opens the ghostly gate in the mirror for him, and even teaches him how to dismember monsters with grace. Su Duo knows she is the “god” who created all this, yet in the mirror corridor at midnight, he still points their only way out toward her.
Chu Xi smiles, her bloodstained fingertips brushing his cheek. “Dr. Su, your heart is racing.”
“Is it?” He grips her wrist. “Then would you like to hear whether it’s beating from fear of a god, or because I’m falling for a liar?”
When the final candle goes out, countless mirror-wraiths collapse with a thunderous crash. She leans over him amid the ruins, her breath curling around his bloodied ear:
“Congratulations on clearing the game. But did you know? I was never the one trapped in this cage...”
“It was you, and the beast in your heart that even the gods long to tame.”
