A History of the Russian Far East: 3-Volume Set

The vast lands of Northeast Asia have been home to many peoples, large and small, who built distinctive northern cultures. From the 16th century onward, Russia began expanding eastward through colonization. By the 1860s, the borders of the Russian Far East had largely taken shape in their modern form, making Russia China’s largest land neighbor. The Russian government subsequently accelerated migration and built railways, driving social and economic changes in the Far East. During the Soviet era, the region developed rapidly and played an important role in regional economic planning, foreign trade, and geopolitical relations. Around the time of the Soviet Union’s collapse, development in the Far East stagnated for a long period. In the 21st century, the Russian federal government made development of the Far East a priority, introducing a series of development plans, policies, and regulations to transform the economic structure, increase the regional population, and strengthen cooperation with China and other Asia-Pacific countries across a range of fields. This new round of development and opening-up in the Russian Far East is having a profound impact on a changing Russia and the world order.
