This is the story of Lin Fang and Shen Qingci, two women serving as generals on the northern frontier, who seek to protect their homeland and bring the north and south closer together. They forge a deep bond in the Western Camp, then travel together to Chang'an to establish an academy where students from north and south can learn side by side. But the old faction conspires with foreign enemies, and war erupts in the northern deserts. Their comrades, including Lang Zai and Commander Wang, fall one after another. Shen Qingci dies on the battlefield while coming to Lin Fang's aid. Though Lin Fang purges the traitors, she loses her beloved and her left arm, spending the rest of her life alone in the ruined academy. Zhao Wan'er, Commander Wang's son, and the other survivors also pass away in time, leaving only Lin Fang to keep their memories company. At last, Lin Fang's remaining years ebb away amid wind and snow, her hand clasped around the wooden hairpin that symbolizes Shen Qingci. Weeds overrun the academy, leaving only endless loneliness and their unfulfilled dream for their homeland, which fades into a sigh with the passage of time.
