An accident sends Ye Li from the modern world to ancient times, where she becomes Xiao Huaizuo's bride, chosen to bring him good fortune. But on their wedding night, Xiao Huaizuo's old illness flares up, and Ye Li nearly gets buried alive at his mother's command. Fortunately, fate doesn't let Ye Li die a second time. The couple later weather many hardships together, but they still can't find a happy ending: Ye Li never gives up on returning home, and after learning where she came from, Xiao Huaizuo chooses to let her go.
