The Nuo troupe put on masks to worship the gods, but eventually the masks began to eat their faces. At the end of each performance, the mask merges with the flesh, and tearing the mask off is like peeling off skin. People gradually find that the longer they wear masks, the more blurred their memories become, and they eventually forget who they are. The old team leader revealed the truth before his death: during the ceremony, the mask would steal the soul and offer it to the Nuo God. The young dancer was horrified to find that the distorted faces of previous generations of dancers appeared on the inside of the mask. They screamed for help, but no one dared to come forward to rescue them because "the sacrifices of Nuo God cannot be touched."
