The Lantern Shadows of Bianjing

During the Zhenghe era of the Northern Song dynasty, Ling Guang, the genius “shadow artisan” of Bianjing, inherits his father's lost arts of light, sound, and machinery and revolutionizes the advertising trade. His “Galaxy Lantern” stuns the capital, but Jin Buhuan, a monopolistic industry magnate, frames him for arson, and his newly founded Spark Workshop is struck from the rolls. Ling Guang joins forces with Yan Shuer, an unconventional woman from the common streets. Armed with half of a mysterious, military-grade “Thousand Mechanisms Diagram” and ingenious techniques involving lenses and acoustic codes, he struggles to make a living amid hidden currents and takes in a refugee girl named Azhan. During the Xuanhe era, the realm descends into chaos. Ling Guang completely abandons military technology and turns the “Thousand Mechanisms Diagram” into a solar cooker to help refugees. A master craftsman rides a wooden kite into battle, is gravely wounded, and leaves Ling Guang a craft lock and a final reconciliation. With Bianjing in peril, Ling Guang draws on everything he knows to build a “light-and-shadow beacon system” from lanterns at brothels across the city, storytellers' clappers, and children's clay flutes, helping the Zong family army defend the city. After the Jin forces retreat, Ling Guang and Yan Shuer establish the “Lightdust Academy” in Hangzhou, teaching orphaned children how to kindle fire with light. Beneath the setting sun over West Lake, the colorful pinwheel in Azhan's hands spins, scattering flecks of light that will eventually flow into the shattered land and kindle an undying spark. Core theme: On the eve of a dynasty's collapse, the lowly Ling Guang endures many ups and downs. He moves from using dazzling tricks to survive to understanding the spirit of craftsmanship, transforming the “shadow arts” he once used to conjure illusions for the powerful into a spark that protects the dignity and hope of the people, writing a story of redemption amid the darkness.
