Gu Zhao, the legitimate daughter of the Ning'an Marquis Mansion in the Daning Dynasty, had her mother die young and her father favored his stepmother Li. She was bullied by his concubine Gu Man for many years. She inherited her mother's perfume-making skills and appears to be meek and tolerant, but in fact, she secretly uses incense to identify people's hearts, collect evidence, and step by step reveal her step-mother's "virtuous" guise of poisoning, seizing property, and framing her old master. During the process, she met Xie Heng (later the Shaoqing of Dali Temple), a student at the Qing Leng Imperial College. The two got connected because of the investigation and supported each other - Xie Heng used his case-solving skills to help her complete the chain of evidence, and Gu Zhao used his perfume-making skills to help him see through the murderer's plot.
