The Lop Nur Explorers is an imaginative adventure novel set in the uninhabited wilderness of Lop Nur.
When Zhao Ye and Lin Xia’s expedition team ventures deep into Lop Nur, their off-road vehicle gets stuck on a salt crust. Suddenly, the dashboard rewinds to the date Peng Jiamu disappeared: 1980617. A string of eerie digits comes through on the satellite phone, followed by a voice claiming to be Peng Jiamu. The coordinates point to their exact location.
As they venture farther in, they discover that Lop Nur is a mirror of time and space. Beneath the salt crust lies a tape recorder, and the Morse code it plays turns out to be a tampered distress signal. The Yadan formations become human silhouettes, the salt flats breathe like living creatures, and the fissures hold the bodies of people who vanished in different eras. Then, identical doubles of the explorers appear.
As mirror images, temporal distortions, and mysterious rules intertwine, they gradually uncover the truth: those who disappear are dragged by their doubles into a world of reflections, and the water of Lop Nur is made from the crystallized tears of the missing. When the guardian of the mirror appears, they must choose: stay and become reflections, or leave with their “selves.” In the end, they leap out of the lake, only to discover aboard the rescue helicopter that a new mystery of time and space has quietly begun.
Blending historical mysteries with surreal imagination, this tale explores the complex connections between reflections and the self, the past and the future, through an eerie and extraordinary adventure.
