Synopsis

"Ma Yi Shen Xiang" is a classic work on physiognomy in ancient China. It is said to have been written by Chen Tuan (named Xiyi), a hermit in the Northern Song Dynasty, who obtained the true biography of the Taoist priest Ma Yi. This book is based on Taoist philosophy, integrates the ideas of yin and yang, the five elements, and the induction of heaven and man. It systematically explains the relationship between human body shape characteristics and destiny, and builds a complete theoretical system of physiognomy. The opening chapter quotes Wang Chong of the Eastern Han Dynasty's "Lunheng·Bone Physiology Theory", emphasizing that "human destiny is endowed with heaven, and its manifestations are reflected in the body", laying the philosophical premise of "observing bones and understanding destiny." It is proposed that the face is an "incomprehensible integrated version of the code", and the hair, forehead, eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth and other parts are regarded as the key to decoding destiny. This book is not only a masterpiece of traditional Chinese physiognomy, but also reflects the deep integration of ancient philosophy, medicine and numerology. The book emphasizes that "the evil bird of prey is harmed by mental tricks, and it will be difficult for God to protect it", which also implies the ethical direction of advocating good deeds and cultivating virtue.
