Fifteen years ago, the Shen family, a renowned clan in the martial world, was massacred for protecting the River and Mountain Jade.
The sole surviving young son was rescued by a loyal servant and went into hiding under an assumed name.
Fifteen years later, the rising martial artist Gu Ying made a name for himself, his dazzling swordsmanship astonishing the martial world.
At the same time, Xie Qianzhi, the powerful prime minister who held sway over the court, suddenly fell gravely ill and withdrew from public life.
During an assassination attempt, Gu Ying was gravely wounded and fell unconscious. When he awoke, he discovered that his appearance had been altered to resemble Xie Qianzhi.
The old servant fell to his knees and wept. “Young Master, the mastermind behind the massacre all those years ago was this very prime minister!”
Forced to become his enemy's double, Gu Ying treaded carefully through the treacherous currents of court politics.
Gradually, he discovered that Xie Qianzhi's inner energy was in disarray, and that he was actually cultivating the sinister art of the River and Mountain Jade.
Even more shocking, deep inside a secret chamber lay the jade pendant he had worn as a child, a token of the Shen family.
“The River and Mountain Jade was never in the Shen family,” Xie Qianzhi said, coughing blood, his eyes alight with a fanatical obsession.
“It's been inside me all along... my dear son.”
