Trotsky's early pamphlet was written in 1904 and is also known as Our Political Tasks.
The work of some Russian revolutionary intellectuals, their contribution to the class theory of the international revolutionary proletariat and to Marxism, and the principles they continue to uphold can be summed up as follows: in their view, Marxism first answers the "democratic" question, not the "proletarian" one. In other words, it asks, "Where can we find the strength to resume the struggle against autocracy?" By making the intellectuals part of the proletariat, the main force fighting for political freedom, Marxism had already placed their subjective political conscience under the constraints of proletarian class interests.
