Code of the Old Ones: The Frontier of Consciousness

On the surface: An extremely old “open-world adventure game” with primitive graphics, pixel art or even a text interface, running on unusual antique hardware such as custom floppy disk drives. It is set in a fragmented digital world called the “Consciousness Frontier.”

The truth: It is a byproduct or gateway of a “mind-uploading” experiment conducted by a lost civilization or an early tech giant. Its core code can interact directly with the human subconscious and even the quantum realm, granting “source code privileges” that can rewrite physical laws or perceived reality on a small scale and for a short time.

Special mechanics: “Cognitive contamination”: Prolonged exposure to the game or use of its privileges can distort a player’s perception. They may gain extraordinary abilities, such as brief precognition or telekinesis, or suffer a mental breakdown and physical mutation. “Data ghosts”: Fragments of the consciousness of characters who die in the game may linger, becoming NPCs or “viruses” with independent behavior.
