The Story of Consort Hui

During the Tongzhi era of the Qing Dynasty, Consort Hui, born into a respected family and exceptionally intelligent, was skilled at reading people and eloquent in speech. Empress Dowager Cixi personally bestowed her title, and after entering the palace, she quickly became one of Cixi’s favorites. At first, she lavished praise on Cixi, winning her trust with her quick wit and impeccable manners. But through one palace banquet and secret conversation after another, she gradually realized just how tightly Cixi controlled power and how much she suppressed the Tongzhi Emperor. The young emperor was timid and had no real authority under Cixi’s shadow; even his day-to-day affairs of state were interfered with. By chance, Consort Hui encountered the Tongzhi Emperor alone in the imperial garden, deep in thought. In their brief conversation, she sensed his loneliness and helplessness, and felt compassion for him. After that, Consort Hui began secretly watching Cixi’s every move and looking for opportunities to approach the emperor, using poetry, calligraphy, and painting to form a clandestine bond with him. The struggle for power in the palace grew more intense, and Cixi’s oppression of the emperor became ever more severe. She even secretly arranged for her trusted subordinates to keep watch on his every move. When Consort Hui discovered this, she risked passing messages through her personal maid, warning the emperor to be cautious. But Cixi’s trusted eunuch, Li Lianying, noticed what she was doing, and she nearly gave herself away. At the critical moment, Consort Hui used her quick wits to plant false information in front of Cixi, diverting her attention and temporarily averting the crisis. Later, she and the emperor plotted to enlist the help of the few ministers at court who remained loyal to the imperial authority. They planned to stage a coup on the day of Cixi’s birthday banquet and weaken her power.
