Chen Motian was born with a pair of eerie eyes that can see "filthy things." Considered ill-omened since childhood, he lost his parents early and was raised by his mysterious grandfather. Before dying, his grandfather used a secret technique to seal Chen's eyes and some of his memories, instructing him, "Keep pretending to be blind until you're twenty, if you want to stay alive." On his twentieth birthday, the seal weakened, and his eerie eyes awakened!
Chen Mo had hoped to keep lying low, but incidents such as his campus-beauty roommate being possessed, a red-clad senior student demanding his life, and the midnight phone ringing again and again forced him into the dark side of the city. He discovers that the world is far more bizarre than he ever imagined: a stitched corpse demon in an abandoned hospital, an online celebrity summoning spirits on livestream, an ancient village worshipping an evil god, and underworld officials vanishing in the human realm...
Using his eerie eyes to see the essence of things, absorbing yin energy to strengthen himself, and studying the incomplete Celestial Master's Strategies left behind by his grandfather, Chen Mo sets out to slay demons and vanquish evil. He joins forces with Zhang Buxie, a seemingly unserious Daoist who is actually unfathomably skilled; Wu Ming, a tech geek who can explain the supernatural with science; and Bai Ling, a demon-clan girl burdened by a blood feud. Together, they establish the "Zero Bureau."
As his strength grows, Chen Mo gradually uncovers the truth behind his "Doomed Lone Star" fate, the mystery of his grandfather's death, and a vast conspiracy affecting the human, demon, and ghost realms, one that could even shake the foundations of the underworld. Will he become the "Celestial Master" who saves the world, or the "Calamity Star" consumed by fate? Whatever his eerie eyes behold, all evil flees!
