In 1975, Su Xiaohe slapped her divorce petition down on Qin Weidong’s desk.
The man’s eyes behind his gold-rimmed glasses were cold. “You want a divorce just because I walked her back to the Educated Youth Center?”
“Yes.”
“I won’t do it again.”
“All I want are ration coupons and a sewing machine.”
Qin Weidong suddenly grabbed her wrist. “You chased after me for ten years, and now you want a divorce?”
Su Xiaohe calmly pulled her hand free. “That’s right. Don’t think I can’t live without you.”
Qin Weidong didn’t believe her. This girl had followed him from Shanghai to northern Shaanxi and traded twenty jin of national ration coupons for the chance to marry him. How could she really leave?
But then he saw her slightly rounded belly, and his carefully maintained composure shattered. “Whose is it?”
“Definitely not yours.”
Later, the proud Doctor Qin knelt at the village entrance as the yellow earth swirled around him, his voice hoarse. “Xiaohe, I was wrong... Please let the baby stay.”
It turned out he was the one who couldn’t live without her all along.
