Synopsis

"The Legend of Killing Ghosts", also known as "The Ninth Scholar's Book of Killing Ghosts" and "The Legend of Zhong Kui Killing Ghosts", is a chapter-length satirical novel about gods and demons written in the Qing Dynasty. The novel is based on the widely circulated folk story of "Zhong Kui catching ghosts", and has been expanded and deepened with great imagination. The story begins with the story of Zhong Kui, a scholar in the Tang Dynasty who was very talented, but was dismissed from the imperial examination because of his ugly appearance, and committed suicide in anger. Emperor Dezong of the Tang Dynasty felt that he had been wronged and named him the "Great God of Exorcism". After Zhong Kui was appointed, he received the help of King Yama and was given a sword and mount "Baize". He was also assisted by two generals, Xian Yuan and Fu Qu, to lead the Yin soldiers, who were responsible for traveling around the world and killing evil spirits. The core plot of the novel is not about subduing demons in the traditional sense, but about subtly transforming various social phenomena of moral decay and human ugliness into various "ghosts". Zhong Kui's journey is actually a process of clearing away these "inner ghosts".
