The laboratory in the heavy rain shone with a strange green light. Wu Chengmo huddled behind the centrifuge, watching the black mucus in the petri dish eating its own kind. His stomach was twitching after not eating for three days, but what frightened him even more was the roar outside the window - those humanoid creatures parasitized by spores were hunting.
"It's the seventh day..." He stared at the family photo on the screen saver of his mobile phone. His parents' smiling faces were cut into pieces by the constantly beating radiation value numbers in the upper right corner. Suddenly, the entire laboratory building shook violently, and the glassware on the culture rack jingled.
A sticky squirming sound came from the corridor, and Wu Chengmo's pupils suddenly contracted. That was the voice of Professor Wang from the Department of Biology, but the vocal cords had obviously been modified by mycelium: "Students... Come out... The god of spores needs fresh carriers..."
He tightened his grip on the pipette gun in his hand. In the barrel was the original strain stolen from the petri dish. The scene of the accident three days ago flashed back to my mind - when the meteorite sample exploded in the centrifuge, only this strain fell into dormancy after devouring other spores.
There was a "click", and asphalt-like black mycelium seeped under the crack of the door. Wu Chengmo suddenly discovered that the strain in the pipette gun was getting hot, and spiderweb-like blue lines appeared where the skin came into contact.
"Subspecies spores have been detected. Do you want to analyze them?"
The moment the hallucinatory electronic sound sounded in his head, a scream suddenly came from the corridor. Through the crack in the door, he saw Professor Wang's parasite dissolving, and the blue lines on the back of his hand flickered like breathing.
