Synopsis

Empress Zhaoci Shengxian of the Meng family (1073-1131), a native of Mingzhou (now Yongnian, Hebei Province), was the first queen of Zhao Xu, Zhezong of the Song Dynasty, the defense envoy of Meizhou, the Marquis of Yu, the capital of the horse army, and the granddaughter of Meng Yuan, the Taiwei Taiwei. It was abolished twice and reset twice. In the seventh year of Yuanyou (1092), she was favored by Empress Dowager Gao and became queen. In the third year of Shaosheng's reign (1096), Liu Jieyu was favored and she falsely accused Empress Meng of cursing Zhezong, which indirectly led to Empress Meng being deposed and moved to Yaohua Palace. In the third year of Yuanfu (1100), Zhezong died and Huizong Zhao Ji succeeded to the throne. Under the instructions of the Empress Dowager, Huizong restored the title of Queen Meng and respected her as "Queen Yuanyou", ranking above "Queen Yuanfu" (i. E., Zhezong's successor Liu). The following year, Empress Dowager Xiang died. Soon in the first year of Chongning (1102), Meng was deposed again and lived in Yaohua Palace again. In the second year of Jingkang (1127), Huizong Zhao Ji discussed with ministers and decided to restore the title of Queen Meng again and honor her as "Queen Mother Yuanyou". However, before the edict was issued, the Jin army captured the palace, Huizong and Qinzong were captured, which is known as the "Jingkang Disaster" in history. Because Meng was a deposed queen, she was not captured by the Jin army and survived.
