A silver-buttoned qipao from an old Republic-era clothing shop, with silk thread wound around its traditional knotted buttons and a birth date engraved inside. Anyone who snaps the silk thread is haunted by Su Wan, an embroiderer who died in childbirth. The thread burrows into their bones, and night after night they feel needles piercing their flesh, until the embroiderer takes over their body and turns it into her “new skin.” The protagonist helps the embroiderer finish the wedding dress she never completed, losing their memories in exchange for a chance at survival, or fights back, risking being sewn into a hollow puppet, and uncovers the truth behind the embroiderer’s death before killing her.
