Yunniang’s Days in the Countryside

Spring awakens in Qingshui Village amid thin mist and the crowing of roosters. Fifteen-year-old farm girl Yun Niang follows her mother, Zhou Shi, learning to light the stove and cook, feed the poultry, and sweep the courtyard. Life is made up of her mother's nagging reminders by the stove, her father Lin Dashan's silent labor, and her younger brother Xiaohu's carefree play. When Aunt Wang from next door comes with a bamboo basket and invites her to gather fresh fiddleheads on the back hill, Yun Niang's fingertips brush the tender gifts of the forest, and a quiet fondness and curiosity for nature begin to take root in her heart. On her first trip with her parents to the bustling market, the colorful stalls, the fragrant sizzle of food in the oil, and the few copper coins she trades for a new hair tie all send ripples across her calm heart. The days flow like a stream, bringing the frustration of accidentally breaking a rough clay bowl and the comfort of her mother offering lard to soften her hands by lamplight. These are the beginnings of Yun Niang's life in the countryside. Amid the small moments of daily chores, neighborly warmth, and work at her fingertips, a spring shoot called “life” is quietly growing.
