A Humble Beginning: The Chief Secretary’s Path to Power

When a streak of cold light from beyond this era shines into the drafty thatched hut in Zhuwu Village, no one could imagine that the fate of a five-year-old child would tear open the long-silent sky screen of the Great Qi Dynasty like a clap of thunder.

The roof tiles are mottled, the cooking smoke thin. Gu Yanqiu curls up by the stove, copying the Thousand Character Classic, but hidden in his writing are fragments of ancient texts from a thousand years in the future, bestowed by the System. Poverty presses down on his young shoulders like a trapped beast; with the heedless boldness of a child, he quietly sets the gears of fate in motion: improving farm tools, eavesdropping on lessons at the village school, binding to the System. Every step is like dancing on the edge of a blade. The price is loneliness and restraint, and a depth in the eyes of a precocious boy that should not be there.

As he places first in the county exam, the prefectural exam, and the provincial exam in succession, Gu Yanqiu's name begins to roil the affairs of the court. He is no longer the child who borrowed oil lamps to study, but a black piece on the chessboard of political intrigue. Behind every victory lies a test of human nature and a sacrifice of self. The System's starlight illuminates his path, but he gradually understands that true wisdom lies not in books, but in the human heart.

When a poor-born scholar can achieve the highest honors in all six imperial examinations and become chief minister, can the dynasty withstand the awakening of the people at the bottom of society?
