"Splendid Clothes" is a novella about 50,000 words written by an unknown person in the Qing Dynasty. Its main purpose is to encourage good and punish evil. Through two relatively independent but internally related stories ("plays"), it profoundly exposes the greed, jealousy and ignorance in human nature, and promotes the traditional ethical concepts of loyalty, filial piety, justice, and good and evil are rewarded.
The first scene: changing wedding clothes
The story revolves around the three Hua brothers. The eldest brother, Hua Yuren (ziyan), was of good character and outstanding literary talent. He was hired as a staff officer by Su Zhentai, the border commander-in-chief, and left home to take up the post. His wife is elegant, virtuous and loyal, and stays at home. The second brother Hua Xiaoren (also known as Jiao) was greedy, lustful, mean and treacherous. Taking advantage of his brother's long trip, he opened a black shop to blackmail merchants and even framed the upright scholar Yun Sheng. Hou Yun was promoted to a high school Jinshi and became an official, and severely punished Hua Xiaoren for his evil deeds. Huaxiaoren became even more frantic and tried to sell his widowed sister-in-law Wenzi, but by some strange combination of circumstances, he sold his wife Qin to someone else. In the end, Hua Yuren becomes famous, returns home in fine clothes, brothers are reunited, and good and evil are in their proper place.
The second scene: moving embroidery spectrum
The story focuses on the different fates of Feng Niang and Yan Niang, sisters of the Pang family. My elder sister, Feng Niang, married Lin Lan. Although she gave birth to three daughters (Jin Yun, Cai Yun, and Qi Yun), they were all carefully raised. The family tradition was harmonious and their children were filial. Her son Lin Ding was a Jinshi and became a glorious family member.
My younger sister Yanniang married Gong Fang. Because she favored boys over girls, she drowned four of her biological daughters in succession and raised only one uterus.
As a result, Gong Bang was pampered and pampered, and when he grew up, he lost all his family property and became a lowly actor. The fourth daughter that Yan Niang abandoned that year was rescued by Bao Liang, the tofu shop owner, and later became Mei Hanlin's adopted daughter Gui E by chance. Gui'e had both virtue and appearance, and eventually married Lin Ding, the son of Feng Niang and a Jinshi, and enjoyed all the glory. Yan Niang's evil behavior of drowning her daughter was finally punished by God...
