People crossed each of them, but there were checkpoints, too, staffed by someone who questioned each traveler. Only after passing the questioning could they cross the bridge, receive the baptism of Meng Po’s Soup, and be reincarnated.
The bridge I was assigned to was for deciding whether two people could be lovers in their next lives. For example, when a man and a woman came up, they would tell me their story, and I would decide. If I judged that they could be lovers in their next life, I’d let them through. If not, I could decide for myself what happened to them. The criteria for crossing the bridge were entirely up to me and my own tastes.
