Later, when his mother's new husband's country fell, he drifted among the common people and vanished without a trace.

The timeline is after the reincarnation of Indra's Chakra has died, but before the Warring States era; the ninja clans have already begun to take shape. Black Zetsu is lying low at this point. The setting is that the status of ninjas has already declined considerably, although the great clans still rank above the daimyo and nobility.
