During the Tianbao era, Chang’an is awash in luxury and indulgence. Du Heng, a low-ranking ninth-grade pigment bureau clerk whom even his superiors barely deign to acknowledge, receives a “dream assignment” that could get his entire clan executed: deliver a precious pigment called Buddha Head Blue, made in a perilous region of the Western Regions thousands of miles away, to Chang’an intact within forty-nine days!
Buddha Head Blue is extraordinarily valuable, and easily damaged by damp, jolts, or discoloration. An ordinary caravan would need three months to make the journey! Du Heng’s vision goes dark. This isn’t a mission, it’s a death warrant!
Refuse, and he’ll be executed on the spot. Succeed? Impossible! Driven to the brink, Du Heng can only wring every bit of knowledge from his mind and stake his life on one desperate gamble:
A race for life along the post roads: changing horses in Liangzhou, forcing his way through Dunhuang, negotiating in Khotan, and crossing the frozen Congling Mountains… Sandstorms, horse bandits, harassment by border troops, and extortion by tribes: every step is a brush with death!
Extreme preservation tactics: lead canisters sealed with wax, human porters, divided shipments… He guards those jars of blue powder, worth more than his life, as though they were his own eyes. One small mistake, and all his efforts will be wasted!
Risking everything in the bureaucracy: the powerful men of Chang’an coldly wait for him to fail so they can make him take the blame, while petty officials along the route fleece him at every turn. Du Heng hands out empty promises all along the Silk Road, scrambling desperately through the cracks in the power structure and making the most of the temporary authority of a mere ninth-grade nobody!
The forty-nine-day countdown ticks on! With only a handful of riders left, Du Heng races toward Chang’an for his life, beneath the blades of pursuing Tibetan troops and across cliffs lashed by blizzards! Can he deliver the Buddha Head Blue to the Cien Temple on the eve of the Buddha-bathing ceremony?
And when the mission, which has cost him everything, is finally complete, Du Heng realizes that the thing he risked his life to protect was only a patch of deep blue on a mural celebrating a golden age, unseen by anyone.
