Regret Teaches Us How to Love

The central theme of "Regret Teaches Us How to Love": “We miss our chances because we lack courage, perseverance, and maturity.

"Regret Teaches Us to Love" centers on the love story of Jiang Linchuan and Ye Qinying, offering a profound look at the nature of missed chances in love. This is not simply a tale of two people who were never meant to be. It reveals that many deeply painful regrets don’t stem from a lack of love, but from loving without enough maturity.

The novel traces how the two meet in their youth and gradually drift apart because of Jiang Linchuan’s hesitation, Ye Qinying’s pride and misunderstandings, one-sided sacrifices, and poor communication. They fail to express their true feelings bravely enough, to stand firm against the pressures of reality, and to love maturely, substituting self-sacrifice for understanding and cooperation. In the end, they go their separate ways.

Yet the novel’s focus is on what comes after the “regret.” Their separation becomes a crucible in which they each grow. The trials of work and life help them shed their youthful immaturity and learn responsibility, independence, and communication, while building a solid sense of self-worth. When fate brings them together again, they show each other mature appreciation and care.

The lesson: Mature love sometimes means letting go with a clear mind and wishing the other person well.
