Spring Camellias on a Broken Branch

Cicadas shriek through the blazing afternoon. On Qingwu Street, the old pagoda tree weaves mottled light and shadow into a dense net, trapping two utterly different souls beneath its branches. Sang Jingheng stands outside the secondhand bookstore, holding an Introduction to Topology. Her crisp white shirt is as immaculate as her life. A cool, striking beauty who has long held the top spot in her grade, she comes from a wealthy family, yet lives like a precision-calibrated clock, sacrificing every morning and evening to competitions and problem sets. An aura of frost keeps everyone at a distance. When Jie Zhentan appears, leaning against the carved wooden doorframe, the scent of citrus arrives wrapped in a gust of unruly wind. Her white T-shirt is casually tucked into denim shorts, an antique-bronze bracer swinging at her wrist. Records and sketchbooks are piled in her bicycle basket, forming a picture of freedom. This girl, known as the bottom of her class, always wears a nonchalant smile, but few know that her brazen exterior is a deliberate disguise. A smiling fox behind a mask, she pours all her sharpness and passion into chasing freedom. The turning point comes with a postcard in the shop window. The words “Freedom has no coordinates” blaze like fire, burning through the wall between their worlds. When Jie Zhentan borrows a light and takes the book from Sang Jingheng’s arms, when a Polaroid of the Northern Lights in Iceland accidentally overlaps with a page about Fermat’s Last Theorem, two seemingly opposing souls begin to resonate. The roar of a popcorn machine, the lilting melodies of Cantonese opera, a mad dash through the streets at midnight… Jie Zhentan wields rebellion like a blade, cutting through the confines of Sang Jingheng’s world. And as the light gradually awakens in Sang Jingheng’s eyes, Jie Zhentan comes to understand that freedom isn’t about journeying alone. It’s about having someone willing to venture into the wilderness with you. A lone star trapped in a cage of “perfection,” and the wind dressed in “rebellion.”
