Synopsis

William Somerset Maugham's classic "The Moon and Sixpence" is a stunning literary masterpiece. With a calm and restrained writing style, the novel tells a story about the cruelty of genius, the irresistible call of art, and the eternal conflict between secular life and spiritual pursuit. The protagonist, Charles Strickland, is a London stockbroker who has a seemingly happy family and a stable life. However, when he entered middle age, he abandoned his wife and children without warning and went to Paris to pursue his dream of painting. His escape was not due to love or adventure, but an inner, almost instinctive creative impulse - "I must paint." In Paris, he lived a life of poverty, enduring material poverty and the world's incomprehension and ridicule. He is cold, selfish, indifferent to other people's emotions, and is even willing to destroy other people's happiness. The novel is narrated from the perspective of "I", an onlooker. "I" was initially entrusted by Mrs. Strickland to go to Paris to persuade her husband to return, but gradually I was attracted by this deviant painter and became a witness to his artistic career. The "moon" symbolizes the unreachable artistic ideals and spiritual pursuits hanging high in the sky, while the "sixpence" represents worldly stability, material interests and moral norms. Strickland resolutely chose the former, and he did not hesitate to trample on all human ethics for this purpose.
